Dear Diana; I am doing some research for my S.A.R. membership, and I'm hoping you can help me. I've got the genealogy down but might need your help in authenticating the records. For instance, I need some proof that John Wesley William Shelman is related to George Washington Shellman(his son) and that John Shelman was his father. If you can help me in anyway it would be greatly appreciated.

Melody Shellman, if you stop by this website again you can contact me throught the find a grave website. My name is Diana and Louis Charlton Shellman was my great grandfather. Maybe we can share information. Just look up Mary Esta Ball's memorial there and click on my name and leave a message. I would love to hear from you.
I am having trouble with my email address so leave a public message for me.

Thank you so much for stopping by, Melody. You are undoubtedly correct about the inability to read or write contributing to the different spellings.

My great-grandfather Wilbert Lee Shellman (another son of Mary Ball Shellman) started out life with one L and ended life with 2. My great-grandfather noted in his divorce record (a treasure trove of information, that) that he could neither read nor write, but could just sign his name (and that not well, I have a copy of it), so that may have had something to do with it.

How odd that the name is spelled differently in the same family. I wonder if there was a reason and if you'll ever discover what it was.
